Poverty Advocacy
|
MCC Ontario works directly with the people in our province who are the most impacted by poverty through a number of different programs. In the process of our work, we find a number of ways in which government policies and programs can be changed or improved to reduce poverty and increase the level of dignity and respect with which people in our province live. For example: We see the need for our social assistance system to be revamped such that all people in Ontario receive an income sufficient to meet all their basic needs. We also see the need to create a system that respects the humanity of recipients. We see the need for a minimum wage high enough that a person working fulltime, full year does not have to live in poverty. We also see the need to enhance and effectively enforce Ontario's employment standards to ensure that all people are treated justly at work. We see the need for more affordable housing and supportive services to prevent poverty and decrease the negative impacts that poverty has on our entire community. We also see the need to shift social attitudes towards our neighbours who have no home. As citizens in a democratic country, MCCO recognizes our responsibility to speak to governments in support of public policies that help assure everyone can live a life with dignity and free of poverty.
