MCC Ontario Report
Annual Report
They broke bread … with glad and joyful hearts … A Table of Sharing—sometimes a picnic table, other times a kitchen table, and frequently a table at Tim Hortons. These are the tables around which God’s love and compassion were shared in MCC this year, as in many years. But this year we also tried to measure the impact of this hospitable sharing. And the results were striking! Circle of Friends is an MCC Ontario program working with women experiencing persistent homelessness in Kitchener. Focussed research in recent months demonstrated the direct link between investment in Circle of Friends and a reduction in shelter use, in the use of psychiatric services and ambulances, and in emergency room use. And the research also put a value on the positive impact on volunteers. And the results? A 314% return over two years! That’s $3.14 for every dollar spent. Rarely has MCC done this kind of measuring. We are relationship people, eager to share with you the story that we were hospitable. But what about impact? Why do we hear about the number fed when the boy allowed Jesus to share his fish and loaves?! Do we not have an impact interested God? We can never forget the choice of the young man to share with 5,000 others rather than hoard. Just as we can never overlook the hundreds of volunteer hours invested in Circle of Friends or the thousands more invested across MCC in Ontario. But neither can we forget the immeasurable investment of God’s grace, whose immeasurable returns are what vault our work from “our work” to “God gave the increase.” So we share, we measure the impact of sharing, and then we fall on our knees in gratitude for the bountiful results of our efforts generously blessed by our loving God.
